So I’ve talke
d about the kids, and how they have stolen our hearts. Right? Because we are so passionate about pouring into them, we have been walking around trying to recruit more “regulars” to our daily kids program. To be honest, this strategy has an extremely low conversion rate.
Last Tuesday we set off on one of these invitatie (invitation) walks trying to stay positive but feeling unproductive. As we passed the orphanage, currently maxed out a
t 100 children, we saw all the kids lined up outside. How do we get to them?! We asked our translator, Ana, if we could talk to the orphanage director for permission to spend time in the afternoons with the kids and…
…permission granted! Super jacked
we now spend the first part of the afternoons running the kids program for the street kids, and then head to the orphanage where we continue playing games and hanging out with the orphan children. This is HUGE because the director has never allowed anything like this before.
Since the orphanage is operating at max capacity, there are still parentless children living by themselves. One family in particular has caught our attention because they consistently come to the kids program. The first weeks they were quiet, shy, and would run away whenever you tried to get close to them. They now come running with arms wide open and face lit. The contrast is wild and wonderful!
We stopped by their house one time and were totally broken by it. F
ollowing that encounter we have tried to get them set up for success as they grow up in that house. We completely gutted and cleaned the inside, washed the mounds of clothing, planted potatoes and turnips in the garden, and gave a few haircuts. If we can find a good spot for a coop we want to get them chickens too, for a more self-sustainable environment. Their living con
ditions are unreal and it’s been heartbreaking to see how they get by with essentially nothing.
As our ministry winds down here, we seem to be building momentum that I hope will carry
over to next month. Have I told you where we’re going? It’s back to Romania for my team. We’ll be working solo at this kid’s camp. This will be awesome because we can utilize the Romanian lingo we’ve picked up here for a while longer. Perk!
