My team and another world race group decided to team up one night and share some Holy love. We went to the grocery store and bought 2 five pound bags of rice and beans which were dirt cheap. We got little styofoam bowls and spoons and were able to make over 50 hot meals. Our teams planned on going around the Central Park at night handing out hot meals to the homeless community. People at the hostel even joined in in helping us cook and prepare the bowls. They even helped write God is with you and Jesus loves you in Spanish on all 50 of them. I just love how contagious the Lord is. You can’t help but want to be around Him Whether you know Him or not
Our two teams and our new friends from the hostel hit the streets ready to meet some divine appointments. And boy did we ever. We split up and took the town by storm handing out meals, praying for people and telling them how much Jesus loves them. At one point I turned around looking for more people to feed when seriously almost everyone in the park was holding a white styrofoam bowl. That meant that almost everyone in the park had been approached and talked to about Jesus all in less than an hour. It’s amazing how much can be accomplished when the body of Christ comes together to work.
Our very last stop for the night was this precious man named Edwin. He’s 41 and from Guatemala. Edwin was in an accident when he was two and it left the left side of his body paralyzed. He lives in the park and takes photos of tourists to make money but not many people want him to take their picture. He was extremely appreciative for a meal and asked if we could all pray for him so we gathered around him and prayed for God to show up. And he did. Edwin went from somber to joyful. He was smiling and laughing and singing with us. We worshipped with him for almost an hour sitting in the middle of the park at night. Two other Guatemalan men came over and joined us too. Contagious love. Edwin even got up and was able to walk a few steps without his crutches. Praise Jesus! There was just so much joy on his face. I looked around at my team, the other race team, our hostel friends, and the other Guatemalans laughing and praising the same God together despite any background differences or language barriers all starting with a little white cup of rice and beans.
