I just want to give you all a quick overview of what a day in Keyo, Uganda looks like.
– 6:30 am– Wake up in my tent in a large warehouse-esque classroom to the mooing of
cows and the sound of goats roaming our “front yard”
– 6:35 am-Go outside to use the restroom which consists of a hole in the ground in a “bathroom stall” infested with cockroaches and spiders
– 6:45 am-Brush my teeth standing outside using my bottled water to rinse my mouth and spitting the water onto the ground
– 7:00 am-If I’m feeling risky, I take a shower. A little shack outside of our room with no roof and one entire wall missing…the cows get quite the show!
– 7:30 am–9:00am-Team prayer and breakfast (usually bread and butter and sometimes tea)
– 9:00 am-11:30 am-Youth program- a time where my team teaches kids songs, Bible stories and games. My specialty is teaching the kids a song about a moose who dies…they love it!
– 12:00-3:00 pm-Rest time. It’s too dang hot to do anything else!
– 3:00-6:00 pm-Head into the camps. We spend time praying and talking to people who live in the IDP (Internally Displaced People) camps. Many have lived there for over 10 years and have incredible stories.
– 3:00-6:00 pm-Cook dinner- two people always stay behind and don’t go into the camps, to work on dinner. It can take hours to make because we first have to build a fire in a small cooking contraption and then make food on top of the fire in big medal bowls.
– 6:00-7:00 pm-Neighbors come with drums and tons of kids to sing and dance with us
The rest of the night is productive only because of our beautiful headlamps!
– 7:00 pm-Eat dinner usually consisting of rice and beans.
– 8:00 pm-Team debrief of the day. We spend time talking about the day, telling people the good we saw in them and praying.
– 10:00 pm-Time for bed and “healthy lifestyle”- lots of push-ups and sit-ups. Go to sleep to the sound of cows mooing behind our room.
So that is a little about my day. I hope your days are just as random and interesting as mine!
