I love how God uses simple things to teach me deep spiritual lessons. Here’s something He taught me in Ireland.
It rained almost the entire time we were in Ireland. Sometimes just a light drizzle, sometimes a pounding painful hurricane-like downpour. One morning I got up and surprise! No Rain! So I went out towards the ocean. It was low tide so I could walk out pretty far. I thought I would have some nice peaceful quiet time with God, but I took my rain poncho just in case. I had just found a nice little spot on a rock and had settled in for some Jesus time…and the heavens opened and it started absolutely POURING down rain…I was not pleased…I put my poncho on, pulled my head inside, pulled my legs up under me on the rock, and pulling my arms inside closed up all the openings so I had myself a nice little tent. But the rain was pounding so hard against me I thought for sure it was going to leak and I was going to be one unhappy, soggy Audrey trudging back to the campground. But once the rain passed and I removed my poncho, I discovered that I was completely dry. I couldn’t believe it. To actually feel thousands of little rain drops hitting you and they have no power to get you wet.
Then I felt like God was telling me that He can be my spiritual poncho. No matter how hard it is raining, how much it seems like you aren’t going to get through unscathed, if you press into God and make sure every part of yourself is under His control, nothing has the power to harm you.
But let all who take refuge in you be glad;
let them ever sing for joy.
Spread your protection over them,
that those who love your name may
rejoice in you.
-Psalm 5:11
