I wrote this blog while in Quiche, Guatemala & just didn’t get the chance to post it. So here’s trying to catch up. We are now in Palacaguina, Nicaragua.
1. Our group was given a tour of the Quiche hospital, including pediatrics & post-partum. On each wing of the hospital, there is only one nurse.
2. I purchased a thermometer for 4 & 1/2 quetzales (the equivalent of about 50 cents). The only kind available was mercury & it reads Celsius not Fahrenheit. Time to review those good ol’ conversions from school.
3. The hospital in Quiche doesn’t have a single defibrillator. It’s a scary place.
4. There was a wide array of taxis here. We rode in a school bus, the back of a truck, a Tut-tut and a van so far. The truck was by far the most fun, but the Tut-tut finished a close second.
5. Some of the school teachers look are as young as 15. Once they complete their education, they can intern at the school and become a teacher.
6. The corn crop is grown straight up the mountainside… no flat fields, just right up the incline.
7. I was able to zip-line in the mountains, over a gorgeous lake with volcanos in the distance.
