The day we arrived in Kunduchi, Pastore Mungu told us about a wedding that we were invited to and we then discovered when reading the invite, that it was that same day, in just a few hours. It turned out to be number two party of three parties celebrating the upcoming marriage of one of our contacts sister. So anyways we all got dressed in the nicest stuff we owned and headed out to this celebration. We didn’t end up leaving until 9:30 and arrived past 10, even though it was just down the street because our driver didn’t know where it was, I was begining to wonder if we’d ever make it. We watched the celebration for about an hour and a half not knowing what was going on because it was all in Swahili. While we were sitting there taking everything in, a man came up and snapped a picture, thankfully I smiled. Unreal. Logan saw what was happening and then burst out laughing until she sucked in her breath as she realized that she was next. HA!
Seconds away from being free, the sister of the bride told us we couldn’t leave because we hadn’t tried African food yet. I’m pretty sure we were put in line before close friends and even some of the family members. Eek! Our contact told us that it wasn’t rude to turn down food in the buffet line but whatever we took we had to eat. Perfect. I could do that. I got some pretty dirty looks as I turned down all kinds of meat and other things I couldn’t identify, but I managed to make it through without anything too questionable. Phew! Even though we had eaten dinner before we arrived, I somehow managed to eat EVERYTHING on my plate. Some of my team didn’t have as much luck as I did and their plates were piled high with all sorts of things. They tried to eat as much as they could and what they couldn’t got ditched under the table when no one was looking, or put on my foremerly empty plate. Most of the food actually was quite tasty, even the cooked banana in some sort of sauce. Just when we thought the day couldn’t get anymore ridiculous, our contact brought over an envelope filled with pictures. Huge pictures of us! Yes, they had printed off all the pictures that the man had taken of us. We took our pictures and w
ent on our way deciding that this was the most hilarious first day, ever!
