One of my favorite memories of Romania is the day we went to one of our contacts house for a picnic. Not knowing what to expect from the Hungarian picnic, we walked for about 20 minutes from our house in the downcast weather to “the picnic spot”. When we arrived we were at the cutest little house of one of our contacts. Apparently “picnic” means BBQ to the Hungarians… sounds good to me 🙂
Our time lasted from the afternoon into the evening. Honestly, it felt like time had slowed down , or even stopped. We spent the day together in the beautiful two room house and in their backyard which reminded me of what the Garden of Eden might have been like.
Eating berries I`ve never heard of, (which were delicious by the way), holding warm, fuzzy bunnies, singing songs of praise to God and just enjoying each other`s presence felt like bliss. An incredible meal was prepared for us, some of the most delicious food I`ve ever tasted. Everything was homemade or home grown. There was macaroni salad, potato salad, bread, sweet pickles, mici (mici is a mix between lamb, pork and beef), sausages and the best dill dip ever!
Also on the menu was rabbit… normally I would say “Uh uh! I ain`t tryin that.. especially since I just held a bunch of baby bunnies!“ BUT I felt my adventures side come out and I was curious and since this side of me hardly ever makes an appearance I decided to go with it. (Kaleigh I know right now you are reading this and are horrified, I`m sorry! If it makes you feel any better, after my first attempt, I stopped myself and thought “What am I doing?!”) Another thing I don’t like to do is eat meat that is near any bones and this meat was definitely on a bone, a leg bone.. Okay so back to the story. The next thing I thought was, don’t think about it… I might have even closed my eyes before I took a bite lol… Much to my surprise, it wasn’t actually that bad, in fact, it was kidna good. It tasted a lot like chicken but a little drier. I probably would even eat it again. (By the way, we saw the rabbits that were HUGE! Bigger than a cat.) Needless to say, I was quite impressed with myself.
