I exhaustedly huffed my way through the last quarter mile of my morning run and as result, I
was quick to respond to an easy excuse to stop running. He was dressed in a dirty white shirt and
khahi shorts. With a simple glance of his smile, it is immediately evident he
understood life in a way I did not.
“Eleazar,
Como esta?”
Pause,
lets take a moment. The most common and most expected response to this familiar
question would be, “Muy bien.” Right? But that’s not what he said.
Nope, thats not what he said at all.
this is the day that the Lord has made, let us rejoice and be glad in
it.” I smiled and agreed with him, and then I finished my morning run.
two days later, and this time I was beginning my morning run.
Como Esta?”
he replies, “This is the day that the Lord has made let us rejoice and be
glad in it.” This time he had my
attention. He’s right, I thought. This is the day that the Lord has made. I will
rejoice and be glad in it. I cranked up the music on my IPod a little bit
louder, and I ran just a little bit faster that morning.
third time is a charm. Now Pamela and I are playing volleyball as a perfect array of orange an yellow beams danced across the evening sky. Eleazar was walking his dogs, and he came over
to watch us play.
” How was your day today?”
it was the day the Lord had made, I rejoiced and was glad in it.”
John4:23-24 “Yet a time is coming and has now come when the true worshipers will

in truth.”
heads up Shekinah Bible Institute in Palenque, Mexico. One of the many problems
facing the Central American church is a lack of leadership grounded sound biblical teachings. As a result, Eleazar offers to church leaders in
central America a free two year program in Biblical studies. Now, that may sound
all great, until you realize Eleazar left the numerous comforts of
American life. Some include air conditioning, sewer systems and garbage collection.
His children and his grandchildren live in the states. The school provides
basic living conditions, and the bathroom has a rotting wall. The institute is at the mercy of financial
supporters to make it through each passing year. It doesn’t sound like a life I would want or
choose. All to live in a mosquito infested land with a humidity factor, that leaves me sweating in the shower some days. However, I do want to know God as Eleazar does. He has a peace in life that
truly transcends understanding. Serving God is not an obligation or sacrifice. It is his honor and great
delight.
then just as you received Christ Jesus as Lord continue to live in Him,
strengthened in faith as you were taught, overflowing with thankfulness.” Colossians 2. Continuing
in Christ. Strengthened
in faith. Overflowing
with thankfulness. Eleazar
commits to daily live his life this way.
May we do the same, waking up tomorrow morning refreshed and
proclaiming, “This is the day that the Lord has made, Let us rejoice and
be glad in it.”
