Month 9
Nepal
Craziness
Well, folks, here I
am sitting on my mattress in the middle of “who knows where”, Nepal. It’s hot. I’m sweating. Nobody speaks fluent English. The electricity keeps going out. I’ve been up since 5am. The drinking water is warm and tastes like
bacon or beef jerky.
Yet, I can honestly
say that I love my life right now and wouldn’t be anywhere else.
This month my team and I are in a small village in Banke. We
are working with a local pastor and his church. The people here are amazing and
treat us like royalty. We get like 4 meals a day. We’ve been teaching English
most of the month and although I’m not much of a teacher I love being with the
kids. I’ve discovered that it is possible to teach English without someone to
translate – all you need is laughter, songs, and a chalkboard.
The chicken dance…very successful and an easy one to whip
out whenever it gets awkward. Whoever invented that…pure genius!
are beautiful. Full of life and energy. Eager to learn. So respectful and
honoring to others. Sometimes I forget what it was like to be a kid – so
inquisitive yet careless. Excitement to know more. Freedom to look like a fool
and not worry what others will see. It’s amazing. I want us as adults to get
back to some of those roots. Laugh uncontrollably. Dance crazily and not worry
what others will think. Find time to have fun. Eagerly ask questions to learn.
Be careless. These children are living fulfilled lives. Are we?
