When you are about to make a big decision, you usually take time to think through the pros and cons, right? I mean, when he pops the question “Will you marry me?” you’re not going to answer flippantly or without careful consideration. I know that making a list of reasons to go through with something keeps me sane when it comes time for my egregiously indecisive self to commit.

Here are some of the reasons I decided to dedicate 11 months of my life to going on the World Race:

  1. It’s a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.
  2. To see what God is doing throughout the world (and be exposed to some of the many ministries serving throughout the world).
  3. My heart races and excitement bubbles every time I read blogs and talk about it!
  4. To surrender a significant amount of time to focus solely on serving others.
  5. To interact with new cultures and pop the American bubble I’ve always lived in.
  6. To discover how my heart for missions fits into my future.
  7. To see more of God’s beautiful creation (and because I love traveling)!
  8. To grow through this challenging experience to become more Christlike.
  9. To escape my comfort zone.
  10. To learn how to trust God with finances.
  11. My flesh resists it.

Whenever I notice myself pondering the question, “What have I done?!” I return to this list. It brings me comfort to remember the dream God has placed in my heart, and to walk in the truth that my favorite band (Rend Collective Experiment) sings about: “It’s only in surrender that I’m free.”

Whether you are facing a dauntingly large decision or not, how are you experiencing the freedom that surrender to Christ brings?

This week’s prayer request: With the holidays going on, there has definitely been sort of a damper on the mood of all our festivities because of knowing that I won’t be here next year. Please pray that my family would find peace in me leaving next year and excitement at what God is going to accomplish and is already accomplishing just in my heart! I could also definitely use prayer for faith that God will come through on the financial end of things!
