Today God asked me what I think of the Ten Commandment! I thought about it for a little bit and was like well God I learned about them when I was little in Sunday school but haven’t really thought about then much since then. I feel like they are more of just guidelines to live by. That’s when God was like I want to show you what I really ment when I gave the Ten Commandments to Moses.
I turned to exodus 20 In the Bible and started to read the Ten Commandment. One by one God and I went over what each of them ment and how I was to apply it to my life! I’m going to share the first five today!
1. You must not have any other God but me.
This is the first step into realizing that there are no other Gods in the world.
2. You must not make for yourself an idol of any kind or an image of anything in heaven or earth or sea. You must not bow down to them or worship them, for I, the lord your God, am a jealous god who will not tolerate your affection for any other gods.
This one I am beyond guilty of. For basically my whole life up until two or three years ago I made sports and my athletic atheltic ability my god. I would work on whatever sport it was all the time. It’s all I talked about or thought of. There are so many temptations in this world that I can let become my obsession before I even realize it.
3. You must not misuse the name of the lord your god. The lord will not let you go unpunished if you misuse his name.
I have done this numerous times while growing up. What God showed me was when I do that I make his name empty and worthless.
4. Remember to observe the sabbath day by keeping it holy. Sabbath day is a day of rest dedicated to God.
I never practiced this until i went on the race. during the sabbath days on the race I got to thank jesus and get renewed by him so that my cup was overflowing when I got back out to ministry. This one is hard to obey now that we live in such a busy world. But it’s something that I want to keep doing!
5. Honor your father and mother. Then you will live a long, full life in the land the lord your God is giving you.
This one I always skimmed over really qucI’m and pretended that it wasn’t there. But God showed me that when he says honoring that he doesn’t mean to listen to all their advise and do it. It doesn’t mean that when they tell you no but God tells you yes that you should listen to your parents. What it means is that honoring them is to realize that you are not self sufficient and self existent. By doing this you become one step closer to humility and gratitude And humility and gratitude are the foundations of a long,full life.you can ask anyone of my family members I am so bad at being grateful. I think that is why God pointed this out to me.
The ten commandments are here to be lights on the path that God puts out for us to walk. If we do them all and do not know jesus they are pointless. God gave them to us because he knows that humans are not perfect, so he gave us guidelines to live by.
This is exciting stuff! By living out the Ten Commandments we get to live a holy life with God! I love that he gives us so much grace so that when we fail one of the Ten Commandments he is there to forgive us. Then teach us how to be More like him!
