Sadly, after a week here in Mozambique, my Kindle screen
broke L
I can still read a few things if I change the orientation of the page, but
mostly, it is dead. Before the untimely demise, I managed to read 3 books-

1-
Bossypants by Tina Fey: FUNNY BOOK! I
knew it would be funny, but I really enjoyed hearing about her life story and
how awkward she was growing up. I read a review the other day for this book
that didn’t speak very highly of it, but I really liked it. I would recommend
it for anyone who wants a good laugh, is slightly feminist, or is just a Tina
Fey fan.

2-
Their Last Suppers: Icons of History and
Their Final Meals by Andrew Caldwell- This was a free Kindle Book. It
chronicled some last meals of people like Elvis, Julius Caesar, Marilyn Monroe,
etc. and even included a short history lesson and recipes based on their meals.
It was a fun read, but very short and without much substance.

3-
Love Wins by Rob Bell: Even though I was
in the middle of nowhere the entire time whilst this came out, it would be
pretty hard to not notice the controversy that went along with this book. I
wanted to check it out to make my own decision, but mostly because my youth
pastor installed a healthy love for all things Rob Bell in his students. I know
everyone has been up in arms on his views about heaven & hell and calling
him a universalist (kind of easy to do if you don’t read the book correctly),
but I found some nice nuggets in this book. Some of the things he said I didn’t
really care for, but I enjoyed his different perspective on heaven & hell.
Not that they don’t exist, but that, instead of focusing solely on the
afterlife, we as Christians should work at bringing heaven down into earth-to
look after the poor, erase wars and slavery, take care of the widow, stop
living such selfish lives. Sorry if you hate him and now you think I’m a
universalist. Promise you I’m not!

I’m still going through “Lord, I Want to Know You” by Kay
Arthur, and have enjoyed everything that I’m learning. During our month, we had
the opportunity to lead a ladies’ Bible Study and I suggested we each take a
different name of the Lord and turn it into a lesson. Melanee chose El Roi, the
God who Sees, Robin chose Jehovah-jireh, God the Provider, and I chose El
Shaddai, the All-Sufficient One. [Suzi was sick that day] Our presentation went
really well, even though there was only one lady who showed up!

I’ve been continuing my morning routine of reading the Book
of Common Prayer, and Melanee has started to join me! This month I read through
the rest of Deuteronomy, Ruth, and started reading Acts, which may be my new favorite
book of the Bible. Such great stories of the early church.

Who knows what I’ll be reading in the coming months? Loretta
is letting me borrow her copy of The Red Tent, and hopefully our contact
in SA will have some books for us to borrow.
Let me know if you’ve been reading anything interesting!
