It’s the little things that make all the difference. Those small moments that can easily be overlooked if you don’t slow down and take notice. I’ve been trying to make the most of these moments and not take them for granted.
Like seeing the familiar green of a Milo jar on the shelf of a little shop in South Africa or driving on the left side of the road or getting to watch the Canadian and Americans have their first sip of ginger beer. They catch my by surprise but make each day so much better.
It’s like that in my team. The six of us have been thrown together and we hardly know each other. Well what a change one week can make! Each day we seem to find the little things that unite us.
For example, Brittani and I like to make the exact same face when taking photos. Most people know that I hate bananas and I love that Kira is on the same page as me. Meredith asks the same amount if not more questions than I do a day. It’s not common to meet someone who hasn’t watched Star Wars, Harry Potter and Lord of the Rings but Julie understands because she hasn’t either. If I’m ever craving anything caramel and need a fix, I know Audra is my girl.
It’s only the beginning, and I know in just a couple of weeks the surprising similarities might slow down but I kinda hope they don’t. I love it!
We’ve been in South Africa for just about a week now. We arrived into Johannesburg last Friday, spent the night in the airport and had the adventure of an 18 hour bus ride to Cape Town. Our ministry hosts picked us up and we went to church, settled in to our home and even had the chance of being interviewed on the Christian radio station. It was a hectic first day and we were glad to be straight into it!

We spent two days at the home doing some maintenance and getting a bit of a feel for South Africa and just getting more comfortable with each other as a team. Our hosts, Mike and Ivan have been so amazing at introducing us to incredible people in the community and exposing us to a variety of ministries. We have been able to do quite a bunch of things and I’m looking forward to getting involved more in the community next week.
South Africa is beautiful! What a great place to begin this incredible adventure!
Also, I loved turning 21 in this beautiful place!
