Last week the whole of A Squad converged on Granada, Nicaragua, once again. We gathered to make the crossing into Costa Rica as a single group. In the meantime we had a few hours off in a great city and ended with a time of squad worship. A little backstory: no one on my team plays guitar (except that Zach knows a song) or any other musical instrument. As a team we also haven’t taken full advantage of iPod worship–yet. So when we get in a group with musicians and worship together in English, the time is much sweeter. Often the words we sing reach into my heart and resonate with something I have been mulling over or something I have experienced. Last week was no exception.
If you read my post from a couple of weeks ago, you know that my grandmother recently passed away. Being in the States surrounded by family for a week was the best thing and exactly what I needed during that time. But coming back to the Race and immersing myself once more in ministry and community, it was–is–easy to ignore that my grandmother won’t be there to welcome me home at the end of this year.
While my squad worshipped together, though, we sang Revelation Song by Kari Jobe and I was reminded of my last FaceTimes with my grandmother and the stories I heard from family who surrounded her in her last days. Several times over Grandmother told me to ‘Tell them Jesus.’ Another time she repeated, ‘Holy, holy, holy. The ground you are on is holy.’ During visits my family would sometimes sing to her or play music and she would wave her arms to conduct. She never stopped praising Jesus.
The chorus of Revelation Song reminded me of the legacy grandmother left behind:
Holy, Holy, Holy
Is the Lord God Almighty
Who was, and is, and is to come
With all creation I sing:
Praise to the King of Kings!
You are my everything,
And I will adore You.
Praise to the King of Kings, who was her everything, and whom she adored to the end. May I also praise Him for the rest of my days and let Him be my everything.
When I FaceTimed my family after Grandmother’s passing, they gathered around and sang hymns, singing praises to God our Father. I am thankful to be a part of such a loving family and for the opportunity to be a part of such sweetness.
