Wow, I cannot believe I’ve already been here a week. Antigua is just gorgeous and it’s slowly starting to sink in that I’m going to be here a while. My team is staying in a hostel this month and I’m very thankful to have a bed and WiFi (although quite spotty). After living by myself for so long it is definitely an adjustment to live in a room with four other girls, to always have a buddy when exploring the city and to patiently wait my turn to use the bathroom, shower, power outlet, etc. but I knew going into this that many of my personal freedoms would have to be sacrificed so I’m up for the challenge. I know it will be worth it.
Here are some highlights from the week:
Abstinence talks with teenage boys are just as awkward in Spanish as they are in English. And it doesn’t help the situation for me to stifle my laughter.
I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE Guatemalan coffee. I am thankfully managing to stay highly caffeinated.
It took me less than 3 minutes to fall in love with the kids we will be working with at the orphanage. I cannot wait to spend the whole month with them.
Chocolate chip cream cheese is the greatest thing ever invented.
For the first time in my life I want to learn Spanish and I’m trying my hardest to pick it up.
I highly recommend roasting marshmallows in a volcano.
I could live off of homemade tortillas with salt and lime on them.
I love to sing worship songs in Spanish, even when I don’t know all the words.
Good thing I like peanut butter. I’m going to be seeing a lot of it this year!
I dislike going to the grocery store here just as much as I do in the States if not more.
I’m so thankful for the box of Bounce dryer sheets that I managed to pack in my bag. I appreciate them more now than I ever have in my life and believe that my love of them is going to grow exponentially over the next 11 months.
Our squad was given a challenge to create a video to answer the question “What does it look like?” Our team had a blast making it. So grab a cold one and enjoy!
