Much of our time in Africa has revolved around some sort of schedule, which they commonly refer to as our “program.â€  This can be anything from hospital visits to preaching, visiting schools, going to orphanages, and of course house-to-house evangelism.  Our programs are usually created by our contacts who also take the liberty to guide us through each day.  While this has been an incredible experience for us, serving alongside the local churches, my favorite aspect of missions and this trip has definitely been what we commonly refer to as “ATL’sâ€ or “Ask The Lordâ€ days.

Our last day in Uganda, our contacts had us dress up in local attire for our Thanksgiving service.

Basically, instead of having some set plan or agenda, we just set out to do the things that God has already told us to do in the bible…often these are the same things that we do with our hosts, except for we gain a lot of liberty (to do things our way) by not being in a set program with them.  Most of the time, before setting out for the day, we will take time to pray and ask God for any “cluesâ€ as to what He wants us to do for the day.  Sometimes people will get a word, a name, a place, or a specific clothing item, for example.  It is a great way to change our mindsets and propel us into situations where God needs to show up.

Charcoal Factory on the Nile River

The other day our ministry contacts allowed us to create our own schedule…praise the Lord!  After discussing with the team and praying, we decided to visit an orphanage in a town about an hour away.  We crammed into the local public transport and were on our way.  About half way there our small van, crammed with about 15 people in it, started smoking and came to a halt.  As we all piled out, 3 of us decided to walk through the local village on the side of the road, while the other 3 stayed by the road looking for alternative transportation.  While walking through the village, we met a few different people, who quickly invited us into their homes, and were able to pray for and heal a woman who had pain in her stomach for the last week or so.

Hopping back into a crowded taxi van, we continued on our journey to the orphanage.  We finally arrived at our location about 2 hours after our journey began, to find out that the kids at the orphanage were all taking naps and that we should return in 3 hours.  So with time on our hands, we headed to the recommended local pizzeria down the street.  We scarfed down 3 thin crust pizzas, as we overlooked the Nile River, and decided that we would walk down to it to check it out.

Praying for the Joel, the drunk man, on the Nile River

As we walked down to the river we came across a little shanty town, which revolved around making charcoal.  Entering the impoverished village felt like we walked straight into bible times…yet the people were extremely friendly.  We were able to talk with several of them, pray for about 10 of them (with different back and knee pains from the hard labor), and were welcomed back to the home of one very drunk man.  Several times we thought this man wanted to show us his bitch, but we soon learned that he was trying to say beach the whole time ha!

After about an hour and a half down in the shanty village, we decided to head back up to the orphanage, our original destination.  Meeting with the assistant director, who was from Miami and a huge Miami Hurricanes fan (woot woot), we were given a full tour of the property.  It was an amazing time, playing with the kids, praying with one of the house moms, and just learning about the orphanage.  They had several volunteers there from all over the world and a vision to change Uganda!

H-U-R-R-I-C-A-N-E-S

It was getting dark and we still had a long journey back to our “homeâ€ so we parted ways.  Leaving the house that morning we had no idea what would happen or who we’d meet, but I have seen time after time that when we make ourselves completely available to God and start moving….exciting things happen!

I’m currently writing this from the Dubai Airport waiting to board my flight.  We are moving on from Africa, after 3 mind-stretching months, and heading to India.  Please continue to be in prayer for us as we travel and enter a new continent and a new culture.  Also, below is a video I made from my time in Africa.  Please enjoy and God Bless!!
