I may have eaten dog meat. Seriously. Okay, it might not have been dog meat, it could have been cat meat.
The other day, the girls and I were walking along the beach and decided to get some food from one of the side vendors. Since we can’t communicate with words, we have gotten used to pointing at the pictures of what we want. I was craving something normal and American, so when I saw a picture of a hot dog, I was pumped. We’ve found there are typically two types of responses we get when the Ukrainian’s realize we’re American (which isn’t hard to see), and we don’t speak Russian: they’re either friendly, helpful and they laugh or they are annoyed and don’t like dealing with us. So, two young guys were working at the vendor booth, and they were amused with us and our hot dog ordering skills.
He opened the tin that the meat was in and pulled out this nasty, old looking sausage. He stuck it on a yummy looking hot dog bun, then topped it with carrot shavings and two sauces-one orangish red and one mayonnaise white. It looked extremely questionable…but I didn’t want to prejudge, so I dived right in. It actually wasn’t too bad, it tasted fairly bland. I convinced Ashley and Brittany to have one too so that I didn’t have to eat whatever it was alone, and they didn’t think it was too bad either. Then Anmari came over with this deliiiiicious chicken wrap with lettuce and fries in the inside of it..mmm. We should have went with her to order before getting our meals haha
A few days later, we were at our friend from church’s house and he brought up the vendor’s on the beach and we should be careful eating the food. Appaaarently, some vendor’s have gotten in trouble for selling dog and cat meat. Based on the looks of our “hot dog” and the guys cracking up as they were making them…well, I think you know where I’m going with this.
Anmari and I were joking that we kiiind of hope it was dog or cat just so we can say we’ve had it (and we didn’t get sick), but at the same time, that’s sick haha
We’re off to play basketball and cards with some friends from the church. We’ve been getting a lot more into the ministry here the past week, I’ll write more about that next blog! 🙂
Love you and miss you all!
