We spent a week living in Bieshti with a young family and we helped the pastor with the youth program there. We also helped out with chores around the house. One day we went door to door and asked if people needed help with anything. We spent two days plowing fields with shovels in the rain/hail/sleet. It was hard work and made for an exhausting couple of days but it was a good experience. Moldovans are extremely hard workers. The village we were at was in the country, our house was on a hill and there was a grassy field with a stream down below where there would be sheep and lambs grazing and white geese resting, and on nicer days there were horses and baby colts running around the field. One day I felt like I was in a western movie when I heard horses running and saw two wagons with horses speeding by on the dirt path.

We had only packed our day packs for the week because there wasn’t enough room for our big backpacks. I had packed two or three outfits but it was always so cold that I pretty much wore both outfits at all times and it was really muddy from all the rain. We didn’t have any running water, only buckets of water that we got from trudging through the mud to the well. Needless to say we gave up our definitions of “clean”.

We also helped with the youth program at a Church plant there and that was a really rewarding experience. The pastor we were working with has been pastoring at the church for the last 5 years. It was so humbling and encouraging to see him put so much into the church, youth program, and all the kids even though he may not always see results from it. We thought since we were only going to be there for a week we wouldn’t really get to form relationships with the people, but God placed different people on each of our hearts and even though we had only been there for a week it felt like we’d known them so much longer.

I really enjoy spending time with youth and I think youth ministry might be my passion. I’m excited to see what that might lead to when I get home…
