Business as a Mission
I knew the concept, but was never interested. My heart lies with the children. There are no children involved in running a business. So, why would I ever even consider it?
Well, for the past two weeks I got to try it. My team got to work with Outpour Ministries. Don’t ask me what they do. The better question is what don’t they do. They have a burger shop, bike rental, bagels, and bags, (there seems to be a theme of “B’s”). They also have a children’s home, minister in a Muslim community, visit refugee camps and villages.
Our team got to see a bit of each of these, as well as a lot of the background pieces. We got to help refinish furniture pieces. Like a coffee table made of an old window and a bike frame. Also, we helped fold and distribute fliers to local hotels. And in between we got to do the typical things I have come to almost expect every month: play with kids, teach English.
Although we didn’t do much with the kids this time, I really enjoyed my time here. I’m sure the awesome staff had something to do with how much I loved it. But it opened my eyes to yet another possibility for missions. Just these two weeks have made me consider something other than a lifetime carrier with kids! (Although even if I found a job without kids, I would still find another way to be around them!)
With only four more months to go on this race, people have been curious about my plans for after I get back. Well, I don’t know anything for certain yet. I still have four more countries to go see! But right now I have been thinking a lot about going back to college and finishing a degree in Montessori (teaching). I don’t know where I intend to take that, whether in the US, or abroad, but teaching is useful anywhere God leads me!
