Finding Unsung Heroes in Vietnam

Month 4

I’m finally free to blog! This past month I have been in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam with my team. Our ministry was kind of special this month. We did what is called an ‘unsung heroes’ month, were we searched the city for people who are doing work for the kingdom, but are going unrecognized and/or need volunteer help. Since we have been living in a ‘closed country’, meaning it’s illegal to evangelize our Christian faith, finding these unsung heroes has been more challenging than normal.

Regardless of the restrictions we were under by the government, we were still able to find multiple contacts and leads that are doing amazing works in the city and surrounding villages. We came out of this month with two solid contacts, and many leads for future teams to follow up with.

One of the contacts we met runs a University Christian Fellowship in an area of the city that is surrounded by universities and is overpopulated with college students that come from all over Vietnam. This particular ministry spent several years ‘underground’ and relocating, but now has been stable in one place for the last 4 years. They have been blessed with a great building that allows them to hold an english club, communication courses, study center, Bible studies, student led fellowship services, a Church, and provides housing for 35 college students. We are so excited about the work that is happening there and are hopeful that teams can help further their works in the future.

Our second contact also runs an English club, but focuses on reaching out to the surrounding community. They are part of a larger network referred to as the ‘underground fellowship’. This ministry has over 200 small in-home fellowships and reaches a large network of people. The opportunities for future teams to come and partner with them are endless, as there is much work to be done.

English clubs are a popular way to evangelize here because you must first build a relationship and trust with someone before you share the gospel. There has been a lot of false education on Christianity in Vietnam, so many people are skeptical. When you build a relationship and trust, it opens the door for healthy conversation to take place about who Jesus is and what the Bible really says.

Overall I believe this month was fruitful and we have found some contacts that are doing great things to further the Kingdom in Vietnam. Thank you for all of your support and prayers during this month while we have been flying under the radar and silent on the radio (aka internet).

Blessings,

Amy
