This is a question that was asked in English class a couple nights ago.

Our students usually include a seamstress who lives down the road from the church, a couple of women who give massages just a little further down the road, a young boy from the neighborhood, and a monk that we met when we had to visit the Cambodian border to renew our visas.

This night we were discussing their favorite foods. One of them said they liked hamburgers. Lindsey asked if they knew what a cheeseburger was.

This question led to some confusion.

Class is often full of confusion and us trying to find new ways to explain something that the pastor, who translates for us, doesn’t understand.
The conversations test our skills of explanation and most of the time, we reach a point of understanding without too much trouble.

So, Lindsey asked the man ‘Do you know what cheese is?

And he answered, ‘Yes, I have heard of Jesus. Someone gave me a tract once.’

How did we get from cheese to Jesus?

Some would say that it was just a simple misunderstanding.

‘Cheese is’ and ‘Jesus’ do sound very similar.

I don’t believe it was an accident.

Lindsey had prayed specifically that night before class that the name of Jesus would be brought up.

Who knew that a simple conversation about how you like your hamburger could lead to a room full of people who worship Buddha hearing the name of Jesus.

It may not seem like much to you.  But I believe the name of Jesus carries power.

Just the mention of Jesus’ name is enough.

Cheese is good stuff and Jesus is even better.
