For the past year, I have described my relationship with the Lord like the process of building a Tiny house(which in reality, is on my life check list). All I need. No excess. Just God.
If you have never heard of the tiny house movement, it can be simply defined as a social movement in which people are downsizing the space in which they live in. But there is also much more to it if you have become an intrigued nerd about it like I have. Many people are starting to realize they don’t in fact need all the excess comforts in life that people and mass media tell you, “You need to find contentment in this and or buying that”. Excess that leads to mortgages, credit cards, debt or just burning out. So they downsize. Get back to the basics. Most of the time it is a very difficult transition to let go of so much “stuff”, but the majority( if not all) the people who make this lifestyle change are completely satisfied with their choice. I think that’s because they no longer wear the chains of material possessions.
It has been wonderful to experience this in my own life, on a spiritual level and a literal one.
I had heard about this movement and was almost instantly intrigued. I researched it, read blogs of people to made the decisions to go “tiny”, watch youtube videos, documentaries on Netflix…the WORKS. These people had so much freedom. They could just pack up everything they own within a day and go where ever their little hearts desired. And boy, did I want the freedom too! Then I decided to go for it myself. I took my time and went through every area in my room-closet, desk, bookshelf(the most agonizing part!)- and even the bathroom, kitchen, my car, and garage. Its AMAZING how much “stuff” can accumulate without us really paying attention.
The same is true spiritually. Overtime we gather anger, offense, pride, fear and many other harmful things that get in the way between us and God. Maybe for some people its how they spend there time or energy. Pretty soon all of these other things leave hardly any room for God at all in the “house” that is our life or hearts. God wants to move in us spiritually but we cant because we have too much stuff that we are holding onto spiritually. “But God I cant move, I have this or that”.
So He CLEANS HOUSE.
It’s hard most of the time-letting go-sometimes when we don’t even know if it will even get returned or replaced. It’s hard-departing with things we have been holding onto for so long.
Philippians 3:7
“But whatever gain I had, I counted as loss for the sake of Christ.”
But God does this for our own good because He is the only thing that will last. He knows it, we just sometimes forget it.
Isaiah 40:28
“Do you not know? Have you not heard? The LORD is the everlasting God, the Creator of the ends of the earth. He will not grow tired or weary, and his understanding no one can fathom.”
Sometimes it even takes starting over completely and rebuild so that God can be your true foundation, sturdy walls found only a place of refuge, and a protective covering roof of His salvation.
I know God will have to CLEAN HOUSE many times on The Race, as He does routinely now.
BUT it is a wonderful thought that he will give me something more that I had ever anticipated in the first place…more and more of Him.
Until later.. God Bless! 🙂
in the meantime, enjoy this incredible song by the one and only Will Reagan for some good ol’ fashioned “house cleaning” and downsizing in your own life. 🙂
