10/9/10
We had this party last night with some of the local families to get to know them better. We broke it down. They have this different kind of music called rigatone. It’s fun. The one girl was shaking this Raid can that I guess had beans in it. I danced with this one little 7 year old. She looked like she was 5. Everyone here is short. Today she showed up with her tiny kitten and showed it to me. I just had a Spanish class because my Spanish is sad. It’s more like weird Spanglish. The kids just laugh at me. One of the local women came and cooked the food. I’m proud of myself for almost clearing my plate. You have to eat it or it’s rude. It was rice (which I can always eat), beans, these corn tortillas, and plantains. So filling, but good. We also had a bonfire. We bought marshmallows and it was the first time these kids had ever roasted them. I will say that there were a LOT of burned marshmallows. The boys are crazy and our super tall guys played American football with all the short Honduran boys.
We have just been hanging out, playing cards, doing laundry, cooking, and doing some cleaning around the place. A couple of my teammates went to town for a community meeting to find out what projects we can do for them. We will be teaching English in the schools starting Monday. I want to do some health education, including sex education. It is not uncommon for 13 and 14 year olds to be pregnant. Many of them don’t even understand brushing teeth and getting them pulled is common. I just want to teach prevention. We will see if I get the chance. There are just so many things we could do. The place we are staying is also in the mist of major renovation, so we may be doing some construction. I just want to serve in whatever way I can. It’s what I’m here to do.
