She wore camo pants and a pink paisley shirt. I couldn’t
tell you her name, age, or even the color of her eyes,
because ours met only once just for a moment. However,
her face is one that is forever imprinted in my memory.

This was our 5th evening doing the Outreach ministry,
which consisted of setting up HUGE speakers, blaring
African worship music, sharing testimonies, preaching,
praying, and a LOT of dancing. I’ve always been intrigued
by spiritual warfare and the idea of demonic possessions,
and I believed they still existed in some far off country.
I just never thought I would ever witness it, especially
face-to-face.

The first few evenings at Outreach, we witnessed one or
two of what they call “demon manifestations”, but I’m
not quite sure if I had made up my mind what I really
thought about it yet. After tonight, I know it’s real.

A crowd had gathered at the front and we began to
pray over each individual, per usual. As I stepped up to
the next woman to pray over, her eyes were already
closed in preparation for my prayer. I placed one hand
on her shoulder and the other on her stomach, as she
looked to be expecting a child. As soon as I placed my
fingers on her and began to speak, she started heaving.
A forceful pounding was coming from her stomach and
the violent heaving intensified as I continued. I thought
she might vomit on me, but I realized in that moment
what I was facing, and I decided that I didn’t care
what came out of her mouth – nothing was going to stop
me from praying.

The heaving intensified until she finally fell backwards.
By this time one of the other ladies from the church had
joined me in prayer and helped me lay her on the
ground. Her body began to convulse in a way I had
never seen before. Her stomach shook violently, and then
it flowed down to her legs. Her eyes were still shut, but
the whole bottom half of her body was convulsing so
severely that I had to hold her legs to the ground.
Others had joined in prayer for her and I realized that
my prayers had become a shout, a desperate cry for this
woman’s freedom. The convulsing in her stomach and legs
ceased, but it then moved to her arms. We prayed louder
and louder. It seemed like time had stopped. Her arms
were finally calm. Then the shaking began in her head.
This was spiritual warfare. This was real.

Moments later the convulsing finally ceased. She opened
her eyes and sat up, dazed and confused. The women led
her away from the crowd, probably to explain what she
had just experienced. I myself stood still for a moment
trying to collect my thoughts. I had never witnessed
something like that before, but I knew it was real.

I know that every day we face spiritual warfare. Demons
and angels are constantly surrounding us, and although
seeing them face-to-face makes the presence of demons
more realistic to us, it also makes the Spirit of the Lord
that much more powerful! If the Spirit of the Lord can
work through me, a simple young girl, to cast out a
demon and set a woman free, then He can truly use any
of us to glorify His name and take His stand in this
World.

“For our struggle is not against flesh & blood, but
against the rulers, against the authorities, against the
powers of this dark world, and against the spiritual
forces of evil in the heavenly realms.” Ephesians 6:12
