I have been reading blogs written by current World Racers, and the ones that have me ready to pack my backpack and hit the field tomorrow are the ones about healing. How they laid hands on someone, prayed, believed in faith, and the Spirit did His thing and healed them. I am so ready to witness such beautiful events that leave me saying, “Only God.”
Three years ago, God did just that in my own life, only I forgot to give Him the credit then, so I’m taking the chance now! I had recently moved home from Atlanta and I felt like my life was pointless. I was working part-time at a clothing store after spending six months in an incredible internship in which I met Christian authors, musicians, and leaders, and did so many awesome things. The harsh reality that the Lord had brought me back home to have a part-time job and live with my parents again broke me. I didn’t understand why He had me back in silly little Myrtle Beach.
About 6 months after coming home, my mom told me that she had breast cancer. Here’s something you should know- my mom is my person. So obviously, I didn’t respond well to this diagnosis.
It became increasingly clear in the weeks after her diagnosis that we especially needed each other. She underwent major surgery and spent a while in the hospital recovering. When she came home, there were doctor’s appointments and treatments to go to. Treatment left her feeling terrible, so I would make sure to be home to be her nurse on those nights. The whole situation left my head spinning and my heart confused.
Maybe she would tell you otherwise, but my mom was a rock during all of the chaos. Sure, she had her moments, but she had most definitely earned them. She was so strong and never once faltered in her love and faith in Jesus. Confidently, she would speak life over herself and say that she would be healed. We prayed without ceasing, and He was so faithful.
My mom has been healed and is living a full and wonderful life today! She is a walking testament to keeping the faith in times that seem to guarantee death and destruction.
As I look back to that time, it’s true; all I can say is, “Only God.” To see Mom holding her first grandchild for the first time, to see Mom’s beautiful hair on her head, to see Mom lift her hands in worship, to hear Mom laugh at my silly stepdad. A beautiful woman, ALIVE in every way.
I think we sometimes forget that we are called to take on this life “alive in every way.” It is very easy to get discouraged or take the negative viewpoint on a situation. It’s only natural for us humans to remember the darkness, even after the light has already been exposed. John 10:10, words right from Jesus’ mouth: “The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy. I came that they may have life and have it abundantly.” Because of Him, we are healed, victorious, and ALIVE. The only way to live an abundant life is to have an abundance of God in our lives.
So I just want to give my Savior some credit. Lately my spirit has been stirred to remember His power! This Race is going to allow me to witness His healing power and miracles in many other lands, but my prayer is that I first acknowledge and praise Him for the great things He has already shown me.
I pray that He moves in you in the same way…
Remember Him. Remember that His healing power to eradicate sickness, death, and evil is just a breath away. Healing is in His hands, and we can live our lives abundantly! We are alive in every way.
