First off, Cape Town, South Africa is probably the prettiest place I've been so far. If anyone wants to vacation here is the place to do it! Just don't come in the winter. Yes, it's freezing here. Who knew it was freezing in Africa! This reminds me of the time that I thought all of California would be sunny and hot. Then I showed up to San Francisco. I've been keeping warm by putting boiling hot water into my water bottle at night. Some days the the only thing keeping me alive is the warm water bottle. And i'm extra alive when the cooks make doughnuts. Maybe that would explain my weight gain.
A lot of things have changed since I've been on the race. I don't know what has come of me. Hopefully, I will be some what recognizable when I return home. I now love mushroom, boiled eggs, raisins, sweet potatoes, squash, and fish. In real life I hate all these things. Maybe I'm just eating for survival. Or maybe I'm becoming a better person. Probably not but I would like to. I've been seeing a lot of things in myself that aren't very pretty. Okay so maybe things haven't really charged. Maybe I've just been paying attention.
We have been hanging out with children most of the time. And they are the worst behaved children I have ever met. They don't have stability. White people come and ago from short term mission trips. They have parents but drugs are more important to them. The government gives them money but they use it for drugs and then go door to door on the weekends with their children to ask for food. They don't work and they live in these medal shacks provided by the government. It's just a awful situation. It is overwhelming because there is no way I can fix the situation. I'm only here for another week. I think short term mission trips are good but they are limited on the amount you can do. I just pray for more people in the community to step up. We go to places where South Africans don't go themselves.
I met a great women named Ann. She is so sweet and she is forever so grateful for us because no one ever has come to visit her. She is even apart of a church and no one has come to her home. She too lives a shack provided by the government. I'm encouraged to go to the places where people stay away from. I think in America it can be the projects, some homeless people, the "un cool kids", the LGTB community. Don't stay away from the people that are rejected by society. God loves all people and we are all in the same situation. The Devil is trying to destroy all of us.
Our squad still needs $100,000. I've been blessed with being fully funded but people on my squad are still in need! We need all of this money by July 1 or some will have to leave. I love every single one of them!
Consider giving to my teammates! They are so close!
Mary Douglas(aka wozo) No one brings as much fun and laughter as this chick. You should see her classic dance moves. $2,200 left to raise.
Eric Nordhues (aka pozo) Our newest member! He scares off all the bad guys with his fiery red hair and long very long legs. He can eat a heaping plate of food in 5 seconds. $700 left to raise.
Justin Greenawalt (aka bozo) ummmm probably the greatest leader of all time. The only thing he makes me do is surveys (which i do hate doing). But I think that's pretty good. He can eat everything on his plate in 4 seconds. $2,500 left to raise.
Talk to you next time,
Alyssa (aka slozo)
