Just a few facts about Honduras:

  • Guatemala, Nicaragua, and El Salvador all border it.
  • It is slightly larger than Tennessee
  • The capital is Tegucigalpa
  • The ethnic groups are mestizo (mixed Amerindian and European) 90%, Amerindian 7%, black 2%, and white 1%
  • 97% of the population claims to be Roman Catholic, while the other 3% claims to be Protestant.
  • It is one of the poorest countries in Latin America.
  • It has one of the world’s highest murder rates.
  • Although primary-school enrollment is near 100%, educational quality is poor and the drop-out rate and grade repetition remain high. Children go to school until around the age of 12.
  • The population is about 8.5 million.
  • Around 60% of the population is under the age of 25.
  • The median age is 21.
  • There is a high risk of infectious disease.
  • Around 16% (as of 2002) or 280,809 children are stuck in some form of child labor which is defined as work that deprives children of their childhood, their potential, and their dignity, and that is harmful to physical and mental development.  It refers to work that is mentally, physically, socially, or morally dangerous and harmful to children.
