HE is risen! I truly can’t think of a better way to celebrate than here in Antigua. We may be lacking the Easter Bunny and family dinner, but we have truly had the most most amazing week. Holy Week is big doings here and most of the city has been on vacation all week.
One of our new friends wanted to surprise us this week and take us “surfing” and he had Wednesday off work, so we decided to join him. Honestly the biggest waves I have ever seen, and it is safe to say a fun time was had by all.
Maundy Thursday we went to church with our friends at YWAM and then took in the sights of Antigua. Most of the city stayed up all night to witness the sentencing of Jesus at 3AM, but we decided to head to bed and re-join them at 5AM Friday. We paid our taxi-driver friend VERY WELL to pick us up and take us into town that early Friday morning, but it was worth it. We were at La Merced (famous Catholic church) by 5AM and were able to see the beginnings of the processionals that lasted all day.
It was magical to walk all over the city at day break and sunrise on Good Friday. The city was very solemn and quiet and everyone was getting ready for the day’s processionals. All over the city streets were closed and people were preparing their Alfombras (street carpets). We spend the day wandering and admiring all their work.
We plan on celebrating tomorrow with Sunrise service at the Cross overlooking Antigua. It is bound to be a powerful morning. I stand in AWE of the Lord who ordains my every step this year and forever. I am humbled beyond words to be counted among the family of God.
