Location: Darwin, Australia (Northern Territory)
It is beautiful here. We are at the end of their rainy season and let me tell you it is wet here. It downpours probably every hour, usually only lasting a few minutes, but you will get drenched in those few minutes if you are stuck outside. It’s humid and in the lower 90’s probably but it feels a little cooler while it is raining. When it’s not raining you can feel the heat. In the past 2 months, Darwin has had over 2 meters, about 6 feet, of rain.
Organization: Christian Outreach Center
COC is a Christian living community that reaches to the Aboriginals in Australia. These Aboriginals come from all over Australia and either have family in the nearby hospital or are just out of the hospital themselves but can’t go home yet. They run a church on the compound with Merve, our main contact, being the Pastor. COC also has a ranch that is about an hour away that we have been working on. The ranch provides food for the center.
Housing: We live at the COC in a series of buildings called the Harmony House. We have been blessed with a sink w/ soap, hot running water and beds. I had no idea that I could miss sinks and hand soap as much as we did. We do not have internet here so blogs/updates will only be when we have a chance to go into town (hopefully at least once a week?), so bare with me please.
Ministry: Our main ministry for the month will be forming relationships with the Aboriginals living here. We eat all of our meals with them, so that is a great time to start up conversations. They are all pretty shy so it’s been a bit difficult so far. It really helps that most of them speak English tho! We are in the midst of planning worship nights for the Aboriginals and locals. We also will have activities with the children staying here. We help out on the ranch, do odds and ends around here, cook meals, and hospital visits. We also help out with church. I had the opportunity to work in the children’s church today which I really enjoyed. Darwin in a hot spot for backpackers so we plan on going into the city on Friday night to minister to them.
