In Exodus chapter 3, God called Moses to rescue His people. Moses said to God, “Who am I that I should go?” God replied and said that He would go before him. But Moses doubted and asked God who he should say sent him when the people ask for a name. God said, “I AM WHO I AM.”
He is the Great I AM.
Who am I to say here I am?
I am a sinner. Because I am a sinner, God the Father came from heaven to earth as God the Son. He took on my sins, and with His blood on the cross I am forgiven. He died, but 3 days later he rose from the grave. He left the earth and ascended into heaven to sit at the right hand of God the Father. I am a believer, and I am made new because I am filled with the Holy Spirit that dwells inside of me.
So how do I get the privilege of the right hand? Let me tell you who I am.
Ephesians 2 says “God raised us up with Christ and seated us with Him in the heavenly realms in Christ Jesus.” I am seated at the right hand of the Father as a co-heir with Christ.
My right hand is strong. He takes on my weakness and gives me His strength. I am strong because He is. I am worthy because He is. I am courageous because He is. I am loving because He is. I am joyful because He is. I am powerful because He is. I am victorious because He is. I am enough because He is.
And it’s all because of Him that I am who I am. Because of Him, I am saved. Because of Him, I am forgiven. Because of Him, I am made new. Because of Him, I am healed. Because of Him, I am free.
There are millions of stars in the sky, but to Him I am one in a million. And to me, He is my solid rock.
His love stretches from one end to another, and although my human flesh sometimes causes us to drift apart, we are still connected and we always find ourselves returning closer together.
Because God said in Jeremiah 31:37, “Only if the heavens above can be measured and the foundations of the earth below searched out will I reject my people for what they have done.” An Impossible task that declares I am forever His.
So when I worship Him I spread my arms wide because I am surrendered to Him. When I praise Him I lift my hands high because when I am weak He is my strength. When I pray my right is on my left because I am in His hands and He sustains me.
I am who I am. But it’s not about who I am, it’s about who He is. Who I am should point to the Great I AM. But the truth still stands…I am forever loved just because
I am.
At the end of our second month in Ghana, my team stayed behind in Sunyani while the others went on to other cities. We were all fighting the infamous Q-squad malaria, and living off of gas station ramen and hotel pizza. I woke up at 3 AM, and God started writing this for me. This is actually the meaning behind a tattoo design, so parts may not make full sense without the visual. Yes, I got caught up in the world race tattoo craze.
My first team looked at the passage in Exodus while we were in Cote d’Iviore, and I was captivated by God’s description of Himself. He is who He is. It got me thinking. Who is He? We can’t even begin to understand all that God is. There is no one word that describes the entirety of God. He just is.
I’m going to give you all a throw-back. This passage made me think of the old Casting Crowns song, Who I Am. God, being all that He is, makes me who I am. Part of the song says,
Not because of who I am
But because of what you’ve done
Not because of what I’ve done
But because of who you are
Let’s get real. Who I am doesn’t matter. That’s not me saying that I, as a person, don’t matter. I do matter. What I am saying is there’s nothing I can be and nothing that I can do to change to the way God sees me. I am His. I get His love just because I’m alive. What I am saying is that it’s not about me. It’s all about Him and what He has done. Because of that, what I do should point back to Him.
Once we realize that we hold immeasurable value in Christ and that the pressure isn’t on us, it’s on God, we become unstoppable.
