“Beauty? Let me tell you something, being thought of as ‘a beautiful woman’ has spared me nothing in life, no heartache, no trouble. Love has been difficult. Beauty is essentially meaningless, and it is always transitory” (actress Halle Berry, one of People magazine’s 50 most beautiful people).
As women, we feel the pressure to look a certain way. There’s magazines in every store about “how to get the perfect body” and “how to drop 30 pounds fast”. The radio talks about women who are gaining and losing weight. Instagram is filled with girls with flawless skin and Kylie Jenner lips. But none of that even matters. Striving to look a certain way won’t give you confidence and it won’t help you feel beautiful because you’re constantly comparing yourself to other women. Ladies, if we were to stop all of that nonsense and focus on what truly makes us beautiful, we could turn this world upside down.
1 Peter 3:3-4 says, “Do not let your adornment be merely outward – arranging the hair, wearing gold, or putting on fine apparel – rather let it be the hidden person of the heart, with the incorruptible beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit, which is very precious in the sight of God.”
Peter is not saying that wearing makeup, fixing your hair or having nice clothes is a bad thing. The point he’s trying to get across is that we should not fixate on our outward appearance and completely miss where our true beauty comes from..and true beauty comes from who we are; not what we have or what we look like.
“Rather let it be the hidden person of the heart, with the incorruptible beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit”. So, what exactly is a gentle and quiet spirit?
In Greek, the word gentle is hesychiou (hesýxios) which translates to a divinely-inspired inner calmness. To have a gentle spirit, we first have to know that God is in control of every situation and at the center of absolutely everything. He is the one who gives us this inner calmness and it can only be given by Him. Whenever I think of a gentle spirit, I also think of patience. To me there’s just something so beautiful about a person who is patient and keeps their cool when situations are chaotic or when they’re faced with aggression. A woman who is displaying a gentle spirit radiates beauty.
The Greek definition of a quiet spirit is praeos (πρα?ως) which translates to meek, but means more than “meek”; Biblical meekness is not weakness, but refers to exercising God’s strength under His control..to demonstrate power without undue harshness. It does not mean to literally be quiet. God wants us to use our voice and to be bold, but what a quiet spirit is referring to is to is peace. It’s not passive and weak; it’s dignified and godly. It’s setting an example.. it’s leadership.
A gentle and quiet spirit affects everything that she does, it is an “adorning” upon which God looks with pleasure. A gentle and quiet spirit reflects the beauty of God. You are beautiful, just the way you are. Every flaw, every curve, every freckle was created by The Creator. At the end of the day, you have to determine who you’re trying to impress – men, women, or God.
