This month our team has the privilege of working with Spencer Boulter and 6:8 Ministries in Alajuelita, Costa Rica! The ministry is based on Micah 6:8 and their motto is: “Do Justly. Love Mercy. Walk Humbly.” Alajuelita is the poorest county, per capita, in all of Costa Rica.
Alajuelita is an urban environment and a suburb of San Jose, which is the capital and largest city in Costa Rica. Due to this, Alajuelita has many of the same challenges as low income, urban environments in the United States.
According to the last census, the unemployment in Alajuelita is a staggering 65%. Drugs and alcohol are widely used and cause many of the social problems. Prostitution is legal in Costa Rica and many of the women in Alajuelita work as prostitutes, which is often the family’s only source of income.
We will be working with Team Prisma and doing everything from ministering to the homeless, working in a thrift store, serving in a local church plant and teaching English.
We’ve been here for one day and we’ve already served lunch to the homeless and prostitutes, visited the men’s rehab home and seen the results of the mudslides that happened 3 weeks ago. This month is going to be full of ministry and I am so excited!
