3.24.11
Welcome to the final part of the “Day in the Life” series, this is the Off-Day Edition, and this blog is bound to be as, if not more, exciting as my actual day off. I will not actually pick one off day to follow but rather will summarize a collection of off days.
9 or 10 or 11am – Wake up. (Today it was closer to 11am since all last week I have been getting up at 6:30am to run. I am not much of a morning runner, but it is way too hot and humid to run during the day. Plus, several of us have signed up for an 8K Race on Sunday so I’ve had to get back in shape this month. All that to say, I’ve been lacking in sleep and looking forward to my off day to catch up).
10:30-11:30am – Listen to a podcast by Chip Ingram (www.livingontheedge.org) or by James MacDonald (www.walkintheword.com) to “fill me up”
11:30-12:30pm -Slowly but surely get ready for the day. This often involves several teammates/squadmates coming in and out of our room sharing their plans for the day and deciding that I should probably do something as well, like get out of this cave of a room with no windows before I go stir crazy
12:30-12:40pm – Walk to the Lighthouse Coffee Shop with AC and internet
12:40-5pm – Write blogs, check email, post blogs, visit one my new favorite sites www.discerningreader.com, connect with others at home. Enjoy “real coffee” that’s not instant and does not have sweetened condensed milk (even though both are surprisingly enjoyable). Research the emergent church www.emergingchurchconcerns.wordpress.com. Quick side note: Several month ago I endorsed the book “The Irrisitible Revolution” by Shane Claiborne and while I think his call to action for social issues is important and needed in the body of Christ, I have more concerns about his underlying theological assumptions to recommend this book
5:00-5:10pm – Head back to the hostel, get some street food on the way back (and thank the Lord for the ump-teenth time that I have an “iron stomach” and have not been having the stomach issues that many of my teammates have been having)
5:30pm – Get back to the hostel and head to Gurney Plaza, the snazzy mall by the beach with many shops and a movie theater to meet up with our buddy, Cat, from the hospital
6pm-9pm – If we haven’t eaten street food at Little India by our hostel then eat some street food by the mall that is either Chinese or Malay. Again thank the Lord that Cat is with us and explain the rules of kosher food and that it is ok to bring Malay food into the Chinese section but that it’s not ok to bring Chinese food into the Malay section. By the way, with all this street food, it seems to me like I am constantly going to the state fair. In Minnesota you just don’t find street vendors unless you’re at the Great Minnesota Get-Together
9:00-10:30pm – Play the Monopoly card game that Paul bought with Paul, Greg, Becca, Dex, Ashley and whoever else will play. I will admit I intially hesitant toward wanting to play this game but have grown to look forward to it each night
10:30-11:30pm – Read one of the several books that I am currently reading which likely will be one by Chip Ingram, Francis Chan, Neil T. Anderson, or “The Gospel You’ve Never Heard” by David Rudel (on that last title, if you’ve read it I would love to have a chat about what you think about it)
11:30pm – pray and go to bed
Thanks for tuning in to the “Day in the life…” series, I hope you enjoyed it!
