I can distinctly remember as a child being told in Sunday School how Jesus’s love was like a father’s. That parallel was so hard for me to believe as a young person, because I asked myself, “How could anyone love me as much as my daddy does?”

On my journey this year, pain and heartbreak from kids who can not understand that comparison grip my heart. Orphans in Africa who have never felt a father’s smile directed towards them. Children of Nepal whose dad’s have left home to pursue money and a better life without them. And girls on the streets of Thailand who were never told they are beautiful by a man they could trust.

My whole life I have recognized the irreplaceable treasure of my daddy, but this year, the realization of how his love has shaped my life has taken on a completely new meaning.

He has been my greatest encourager, my spiritual leader and my close friend, but most of all, he has taught me about how Jesus loves. I could make a list of one hundred ways he has depicted Christ to me and my family, but here are the top five ways my daddy has taught me about Jesus.

1.He has portrayed the Lord’s gentleness. My dad has a tender heart towards people and those hurting. He has taught me the beauty in loving people even when it’s hard, and showing mercy to those who sometimes don’t deserve it. “You have given me the shield of your salvation, and your right hand supported me, and your gentleness made me great.” Psalms 18:35

2.He has been consistent. My dad’s love, attitude, and protection over our family has never faltered. He has been a constant source of encouragement to me when I am sad, compassion when I am hurting, and protection when I am afraid. His consistency urges to me trust God with His. “For I am the Lord, I change not.” Malachi 3:6

 3. He is true to his word. When my dad says something, I know it is truth. He has never lied to me, even when the truth might be hard to hear. My dad has taught me about integrity and has given me a passion for truth and sharing it with others. “The Lord is near to all who call on Him, to all who call on Him in truth.” Psalm 145:18

 4. He is faithful. My dad has put my family first in all things, even over his ministry as a pastor. He recognizes what it takes to be leader in our home and cares for me, my siblings and my mom more than anything in the world. He continually provides for our family through good times and bad, and has exemplified what Christ’s unwavering commitment looks like. “Fear the Lord and serve him faithfully with all your heart. For consider what great things he has done for you.” 1 Samuel 12:24

 5. He loves me. There is no doubt in my mind that my dad loves me and he has proven so in his steadfast compassion over my life. He has taught me to share my heart with those around me, being quick to empty myself for others despite what is given in return. My dad’s love for me gives room for understanding Christ’s love for me and the world. “Beloved, let us love one another, for love is from God, and whoever loves has been born of God and knows God.” 1 John 4:7

Thank you daddy for your beautiful example to me of gentleness, consistency, honesty, faithfulness, and love. You are my rock and I am more thankful for you than words can express.

I love you!
