In light of being just past the half-way point of the race, you’re probably dying-aching-in need of knowing my bus playlist.  Our hour long chicken bus travels to the village we teach at (Bola De Oro) is made glorious by what’s bumping in the ol’ ear buds.  I’ve blown through quite a few playlists, in Peru my playlist of the month was titled “For Homesickness and Other Longing For the States” which was all western and melodrama and exactly what you would expect.   Month one of Guatemala was a “Long Rides On Public Transportation” a playlist consisting of exclusively slow core real based around Low and Portishead.

Somehow, this month of my current reality has somehow become defined by Afrofunk, Disco and Jazz… Here are the current contents of my playlist affectionately named “Funk, Jazz N Disco Madness”.

    • Lady (by Fela Kuti)
    • Sintayehu (Hailu Mergia & Dahlak Band)
    • Take Your Soul (The Sahara All Stars)
    • Ride on Baby (William Onyeabor)
    • It’s Magic (Kleeer)
    • Your Cheatin’ Heart (James Brown)
    • Mama Feelgood (Lyn Collins n The J.B.’s)
    • Zimba Ku (Black Heat)
    • I Just Love the Man (The Jones Girls)
    • Winners (Kleer)
    • No Discrimination (Tony Allen & Africa 70)
    • You’ve Gotta Help Yourself (Bongos Ilkwue & The Groovies)
    • Come My Way ( R. Stevie Moore and Ariel Pink)
    • You Make Me Feel Like Dancing  (Leo Sayer)

All wrapped up by a song on the first vinyl I ever bought for myself and packed full of fun joyful jams.  I’m celebrating this season with feel good music because I am celebrating it feeling good to do what I was made to do; Love people well and sacrificially!  I’m celebrating that despite dealing with a parasite and a stomach infection and homesickness, that what the Lord has for me is still joy! Celebrating with funky bass on Guatemalan Public Transportation.
