Happy
4th of July. My team decided
to take the day off today in order to properly celebrate Independence Day. We spent the morning at the mall. I enjoyed not having to not have to worry
about the shops being closed or fighting big crowds due to the holiday. This afternoon we prepared an American feast
of hamburgers, hot dogs, deviled eggs, baked beans, salad, chips, Coke, and to
top it off we had red, white and blue cupcakes.

The staff from the Children’s Shelter that have been taking care
of us joined us for the celebration (their kids came too). We played songs about America and talked
about American traditions while the South Africans shared some of their
traditions. They only have fireworks on
Christmas day when they also do a Braaie or Barbeque.

After the kids were all wound up from eating
about 5 cupcakes a piece we went outside for a small 4th of July
celebration. Josh set off some
firecrackers as we all shivered in the cold.
We were going to watch a move on an outside projector, but unfortunately
it started raining. It was a good
celebration; definitely one I will remember.
In Brienna’s words, “Nothing makes you appreciate the US more than
leaving it for a year.”
