With Training Camp right around the corner I thought I’d share some words of wisdom
Dear Future Racer,
Here is my World Race Top 10. Take my advice…
- Listen to what they tell you at Training Camp… it’s ALL true!
- DO NOT go and buy bunch of new clothes/ gear. Bring what you own or borrow. Be prepared for everything you take on the WR to be shared, lost, broken, or stolen. What’s yours isn’t yours, it’s the rest of the squad’s, which is your new family.
- Wear what you’d wear at home. If you enjoy wearing dresses, bring dresses (and leggings). If you wear jeans, bring jeans (even though they add weight). If you don’t wear Dry Fit clothing… DO NOT bring Dry Fit clothing. You will want to feel like yourself, so dress like yourself

- Think about how you want to document your experience BEFORE you go on the Race. If you like photography, make FB photo albums. If you’re a writer, journal or blog. Videographers, make awesome videos for your team! If you have no idea what to do, do what I did… Keep a list of things you want to remember about each month/country. Include people you’ve met, special or ridiculous events, lessons learner, a meaningful verse or song.
- Make quiet time a priority! Carve out space and time to be with the one who created you!
- Whatever it is, team time/feedback/or ministry… You WILL regret it if you have a negative attitude or “just don’t feel like it” so make the choice to choose in!
- Open up! Be VULNERABLE. Share the hard yucky stuff with those around you. It will bring you closer together. And you never know who you could bless or be blessed by sharing.
- Feedback is necessary and a good thing. You will learn a lot from it even if you can’t see it at the time. Give and receive it with a kind and open heart.
- Do to others what you’d want them to do for you. If you know someone likes to play cards, (even though they are a card shark) play cards. Someone else on your team enjoys exploring and you just want to go to the same internet café, be a little adventurous. Chose to love and honor the people that you are doing life with… prefer, prefer, prefer!
- Finally, Love your contacts well! They will still be doing ministry long after you’ve left for another country.
This should get you started. Know that those who’ve gone before you have been changed… for the better, and we are praying the same for you!
Love and Blessings!
